I knew the timing was risky, and that was part of the thrill. My husband would be home soon, but I didn’t send my new lover away when he stood at the door again. I let him stay, just as I wanted. And then my husband came in. Quietly. He realized almost immediately what was going on, but he said nothing. He stayed where he was watching, trembling with excitement. I’ve always loved that moment. The moment when it dawns on him that he’s no longer as much a part of the scene as he’d imagined, but just a shadow on the sidelines, drawn to what he can’t change.
