I guess every stepdad is proud watching his stepson grow into a fine young man. It’s extra special, and bittersweet, for me because I spent so many of Brody’s teen years just wondering if I could keep him alive and out of jail. I can’t take too much credit for the fact that he pulled himself together, except for the fact that I never gave up on him. Literally, not for a single second. I couldn’t fix him, though, no matter how hard I tried.
